About Dr. Sung-Min Cho

Dr. Cho earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Cincinnati and his medical degree from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his neurology residency at the Cleveland Clinic (2013–2017), where he was recognized with multiple Excellence in Teaching Awards and served as Chief Resident. He then pursued a fellowship in neurocritical care at Johns Hopkins University, joining the faculty in 2019. His research focuses on acute brain injury in critically ill patients, particularly those undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Dr. Cho has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, with more than 5,800 citations and an h-index of 40 as of May 2025 . Notable works include studies on portable MRI for brain injury detection in ECMO patients and investigations into cerebral autoregulation during ECMO support. He also published a landmark paper on comparing stroke rates between HVAD vs. HeartMate 3, which impacted the clinical care of LVAD patients. Dr. Cho also chaired ELSO guidelines on neurological monitoring and management of ECMO patients. Dr. Cho is a sought-after speaker with numerous national and international invited talks, including plenary lectures at international conferences such as the Asia-Pacific ELSO, American ELSO, and the Korean Neurocritical Care Society. His work continues to advance the understanding and treatment of neurological complications in critically ill patients, bridging clinical practice and biomedical innovation. Dr. Cho has multiple extramural fundings from NIH, DOD, foundations and industry. Through his leadership in the HERALD Lab and dedication to advancing neurocritical care, Dr. Cho continues to contribute to the development of innovative therapies and improve patient outcomes in critical care settings.
